During his press conference today, Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes reviewed some of the events of the past few days as well as some of the highlights of the Canadiens' training camp.
Notably asked about the impressive Arber Xhekaj, Hughes mentioned this very interesting thing (without the subject being proposed to him):
"Kent Hughes on Arber Xhekaj:
"We saw in Bouctouche with what DJ Smith said before the game. I watched Xhekaj and I don't think his heartbeat passed 70! We see in him a calm guy."
- Patrick Friolet, RDS"
We love it! Clearly, like the rest of us, Hughes took well to the Ottawa Sens head coach's comments, which had somehow tried to disturb and send a message to Habs players, including Xhekaj.
Not a subtle threat.
It's perfect that Hughes brought this back, to "respond" if you will to DJ Smith, and make it clear that it didn't bother Xhekaj, not at all.
Let's recall the facts:
In a media scrum just after a preseason game against the CH, Ottawa Sens head coach DJ Smith threw out a comment to send a message to Arber Xhekaj.
DJ Smith: "We don't like (players on) the other team targeting our guys (like Xhekaj). We'll be ready for the next game."
- Remarks reported by Renaud Lavoie
And he had then dressed three strong men, in the next game against Montreal, to try to scare. Unsuccessfully, Xhekaj was not stressed at all by this.
"Arber Xhekaj has really gone from, working at Costco, to being so firmly planted in the mind of an opposing NHL coach that the guy is threatened with retaliation before he's even played a regular season game. A meteoric rise." - HabsLinks
We're already looking forward to the next Canadiens-Sens duel, and it's interesting to learn a little more about Xhekaj's calmness.
