A few days ago, there were rumors that the Finnish team Jokerit would withdraw from the KHL championship.
On Tuesday morning, Jokerit officially announced its withdrawal from the KHL. It will be accompanied by Dinamo Riga (Latvia), which will also not participate in the next KHL season.
For now, the decision applies only to the upcoming season, so it is not known what the plan is afterwards. This news follows the Russian military invasion of Ukraine and various reports of increased violence throughout the region.
In his Twitter post, TSN's Gord Miller rightly points out that a significant amount of the KHL's talent comes from foreign countries. Talent that seems unlikely to return to the KHL because of the conflict in Ukraine.
So far, only two clubs have terminated their membership in the KHL, but it wouldn't be surprising if others follow suit.
