Friday night, while many were already in bed, the hockey world shook. The Calgary Flames traded Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers for a huge return that includes Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt and a 1st round pick in 2025.

This deal surprised many as the return for the Flames seems huge. If Brad Teliving can get Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar on long-term contracts, he will definitely come out ahead. Ultimately, he can trade them at the next trade deadline and get another great return.

Many are now wondering why Huberdeau agreed to join the Flames in the Canadian cold when he has a no-movement clause. Bill Zito, the Panthers' GM, was very astute here when, as Renaud Lavoie mentions, he jumped at the opportunity that was offered to him.

It will be interesting to see if the Quebecer will stay with the Flames at the end of the next campaign, as he will become an uncompensated independent player. CH fans are already starting to dream of seeing him come to town, as he has already mentioned that he wants to wear the colors of his childhood club.
