During his press conference after the team's practice, Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis was very honest when asked about Sean Monahan's health.
"Honestly, he's hit a plateau. We'll see what happens next week."
Well, what does this mean? It's actually quite simple. Currently, Monahan's situation is not getting worse, but it's not improving either. The problem is that the trade deadline is in less than two weeks, and Monahan is still unable to practice normally with his teammates. So he must not be as close to a return as they thought.
Yes, there is some positive news regarding Monahan's value at the moment. Bo Horvat and Ryan O'Reilly are no longer on the market, and Jonathan Toews seems to want to stay in Chicago. But if Monahan can't even play a single game, his value won't be high.
Sean Monahan is an excellent hockey player. Even the Flames knew that, and they still agreed to give the Canadiens a first-round pick to get rid of him.
Why?
For that exact reason. He simply can't stay healthy. In a rebuilding team like the Canadiens, it's not catastrophic. But can a team that wants to go far in the playoffs really rely on his presence night after night?
Unfortunately, for now, the answer is no.
This will obviously be a case to follow.
