In an intriguing interview with journalist Arpon Basu from The Athletic, Montreal Canadiens Co-Director of Amateur Scouting, Nick Bobrov, revealed the true reason why they did not draft Matvei Michkov.

And it's not what we thought.

It's not due to his nationality, his contract, or geopolitical reasons. Bobrov explained it as follows:

"When you look at it properly, things become clearer, and we always try to remember that each time, each year, we shouldn't get caught up in, you know, the new shiny object, I guess."

Bobrov never mentioned Matvei Michkov by name, but it's evident that he's referring to him here.

Basu mentioned that it was clear during the interview that Bobrov was aware of the fans' reactions to the decision. He continued:

"It's clear that the Canadiens do not believe that this new shiny object is the necessary element to win a Stanley Cup.

You know, how many 40-goal scorers did the Vegas Golden Knights have this year? It's the playoffs that matter."

In essence, it seems that the Canadiens' management simply overlooked Michkov because they don't believe he is the type of hockey player who can help them win a Stanley Cup.

They drafted David Reinbacher because they genuinely believe he is the player who gives them the best chance of winning the big trophy. That's it.
