During the last few minutes on TVA Sports' broadcast, journalist Renaud Lavoie, who was present at the latest NHL general managers' meeting, made alarming statements for fans of fights during games.

Renaud seriously believes that the NHL may be trying to put an end (once and for all) to fights.

At the general managers' meeting, we were told that the instigator rule would not be enforced until next season. But like a hair in the soup, they came to us with it this week." - Renaud Lavoie.

The journalist here refers to the imposing penalty awarded to Tom Wilson (17 minutes) for fighting with Michael Pezzetta during the most recent Habs game.

«Where is the National Hockey League (NHL) heading?!» - Lavoie

His argument is valid.

If a Michael Pezzetta can thus remove a top-line player from the opposing club for over 17 minutes, it's a great success for him and it certainly won't discourage him from delivering solid body checks.

On the other hand, it can certainly discourage other players (like Tom Wilson) from fighting.

It seems to be thought here that this new, major rule, which no one is talking about, is clearly a big step by the NHL towards the abolition of fights.

You want to drop the gloves? Perfect, but you will have to spend nearly 20 minutes in the penalty box afterward if you are the instigator.»

It hurts and certainly makes players who are likely to fight think twice. It will inevitably reduce the number of fights in the NHL by a lot.
