Although the Leafs' star forward, Auston Matthews, has stated that he would be inclined to sign a contract extension before the start of the next season, many speculations have surfaced in recent days about his future with the team.

On the podcast 32 Thoughts hosted by Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek, the two men made a major statement regarding Auston Matthews.

Indeed, Elliotte Friedman reportedly received a text message from a Leafs player saying that no one knew what was going to happen with the assistant captain now that Kyle Dubas had been fired.

Let's remember that from July 1, 2023, a no-move clause will come into effect in Auston Matthews' contract, who will notably become an unrestricted free agent next summer. The Leafs' forward could therefore wait until the end of his current contract before deciding on his next destination.

Moreover, knowing that Toronto is still without a general manager, the person who will take up the post in the coming weeks will have very little time to offer a new contract to Matthews or to trade him to another NHL team.

The Leafs could therefore have their hands tied in this case and may have to submit to Auston Matthews' decision regarding his future
