First and foremost, they will need to make a decision about the future of the Leafs' Big-4, that is, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and John Tavares, but also get rid of several other debilitating contracts.
One might think here of goaltender Matt Murray, who has been frequently injured during the last season and thus has not met the expectations tied to his $4,687,500 per year salary (the Senators having retained 25% of Murray's salary when he was traded to Toronto).
Moreover, given the performance of young Joseph Woll in the playoffs, there might not necessarily be a place for Murray in the lineup next season.
In these circumstances, could Kent Hughes take advantage of the situation to make another Sean Monahan-like transaction?
Recall that last summer, the Canadiens' general manager managed to get a first round pick from the Calgary Flames by agreeing to take on Monahan's contract on his payroll.
With only one season left in Murray's contract, Hughes might be tempted to replicate this type of transaction in order to get a prospect or another pick in the draft.
In short, Murray and a solid draft pick or a solid prospect, for the famous future considerations.
By acquiring Murray, Hughes could then trade veteran Jake Allen, while Samuel Montembeault would likely take the number one spot.
Such a transaction would present no risk, as in any case, Murray's contract will expire next summer.
What do you think? Will Kent Hughes once again take advantage of such a bargain, as he has already accustomed us to doing since his arrival in Montreal?
And if Murray gets injured, it would mean more playing time for Cayden Primeau and Jakub Dobes. It could be lucrative, especially if we get a first round pick as a bonus. (against Murray's contract)
