The Canadiens' draft rank for the upcoming NHL Draft has just been revealed, and many are already trying to predict what Kent Hughes will do.
Will he keep his pick or opt to trade it in order to move down or simply acquire an active player? We will only find out on the evening of the event, next June 28th.
Until then, we can only speculate, and for that, Quebecers are good. The debate is already underway in the media and on social media about whether the Habs should select young Russian prospect Matvei Michkov if he is still available when it's their turn to speak.
Former Canadiens coach, Michel Therrien, has a well-established opinion on this kind of draft dilemma. He goes with talent, and according to what we've been hearing for some time, Michkov is just below Bedard in that regard in this draft class.
Here's what the former coach had to say this Tuesday at noon on la Poche Bleue:
"In a situation like this, the important thing is to go with the best player. I would go with the guy who has the most talent and the one who can have the most impact on your team. It's delicate, but in my opinion, they will go with the player who has the most potential. They will disregard everything else. Everyone I have worked with has always gone with the best player they thought." - Michel Therrien
Therrien even draws a parallel with Logan Mailloux in 2021 following his off-ice scandal. It becomes very interesting.
"If we compare it with Logan Mailloux, he was probably on everyone's list. At the time, I was in Philadelphia and had personally asked the general manager, Chuck Fletcher, where he was on our list. He told me between 10 and 15, but I don't remember exactly." - Michel Therrien
Wow, Mailloux was thus a top-15 or top-10 pick on the Philadelphia Flyers' list! (and probably on several other clubs' lists) Let's recall that he eventually went 31st overall, with the Montreal Canadiens.
While the situation is completely different with Michkov, the parallel makes sense.
