He took advantage of the event to answer journalists' questions, generously giving his time, and indeed made a statement regarding the NHL trade market.
Here's his exact statement:
This is a very wise statement, and unfortunately, there will likely be inevitable trade rumors involving David Savard, but I maintain that trading him would be a mistake.
There's a point not to forget.
Every time Martin St-Louis pairs a young defenseman with David Savard, that young defenseman instantly looks good and plays well.
That's no coincidence.
The veteran defenseman has invaluable worth within the organization, not only for establishing a strong culture but also for being an ideal partner for the Canadiens' young defensemen.
Pairing Lane Hutson with David Savard on defense would be significant for Hutson's development.
Pairing Logan Mailloux with David Savard on defense would be significant for Mailloux's development.
And so on.
David Savard also mentioned that he would very much like to stay in Montreal until the end of his contract (and we, too, would like him to stay).
Yes, he could certainly fetch a late first-round draft pick in a trade, but I prefer that Kent Hughes keeps him.
Would we prefer to receive a 24th overall pick in exchange for David Savard, or would we prefer that he helps Lane Hutson and Logan Mailloux develop at full speed?
I think asking the question is answering it.
