A big piece of news broke earlier this week for the Canadiens, as journalist Mark Madden revealed that Kris Letang requested a trade to Montreal.

Since then, absolutely no one has denied this information, and there are even other reliable sources who have added to it.

We can therefore conclude that it is 100% true.

That said, the truth is that yes, Kristopher Letang wanted to play for the Montreal Canadiens, but his dream of finishing his career in the blue-white-red uniform might very well have faded.

Kris Letang and the Montreal Canadiens: The Truth Has Just Come Out, and a Trade Between Kent Hughes and the Pittsburgh Penguins Was a Real Possibility

As reported by the excellent journalist Kevin Vallée, even though he wore Canadiens pajamas when he was little and all... Kris Letang will probably never be able to play in Montreal.

Why?

In 2022, he signed a six-year, $36.6 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, a contract that clearly ties him to Pittsburgh for the rest of his career.

«[In March 2022], the year ended with a striking quote, as Renaud Lavoie, co-host of a podcast with the Penguins' defenseman, exclaimed, I can't wait to see Letang in the blue, white, and red uniform.'

A month later, a Pittsburgh journalist stated that no one would be surprised if the Quebecer considered an offer from the Habs.»

You can say what you want about Renaud Lavoie, but he is a true friend of Kris Letang, and he even had a podcast with the Penguins' defenseman.

When he said, «I can't wait to see Letang with the Montreal Canadiens,» rest assured he wasn't saying that by chance. He knew what he was talking about.

Kristopher Letang wanted to play for the Canadiens, and the Canadiens wanted to acquire him.

However, the Pittsburgh Penguins simply made a contract offer that Letang couldn't refuse.

«On July 7, 2022, #58 appeared at a press conference - at the Bell Centre! - to announce a new six-year, $36.6 million contract with the Penguins.»

As Kevin Vallée mentions, it was clearly at that very moment that the chances of seeing Kris Letang play with the Montreal Canadiens went up in smoke.

His new contract is, even for his former agent Kent Hughes, a contract that is unfortunately undesirable.

That said, we still wish him a very good season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and above all, a presence in the NHL playoffs.
