People often talk about the next "Kirby Dach-like" or "Sean Monahan-like" transaction for Kent Hughes, as those were excellent moves by the Canadiens' GM.
On that note, did the trade announced yesterday by the Nashville Predators (with the Pittsburgh Penguins) make Kent Hughes regret not exploring this avenue?
It's hard to know exactly what goes on behind the scenes between NHL GMs, but if Kent Hughes was ever made aware of Cody Glass's availability and the asking price... I can't believe he wouldn't have been interested.
The point here isn't to analyze every trade announced in the NHL and say that Kent Hughes missed the boat, but in this case, it would have been such a logical trade for Montreal!
It's strange to say, but the Cody Glass trade, made between Pittsburgh and Nashville, perfectly combines a "Kirby Dach-like" transaction with a "Sean Monahan-like" one.
Basically, the Predators paid and gave away free draft picks to get rid of a $2.5 million contract.
However, that $2.5 million contract is tied to a young forward who still has the potential to blossom, in my opinion. (a former 6th overall pick)
Glass, 25, is a 6-foot-3, 206-pound forward... He was the 6th overall pick in the 1st round of the 2017 draft and collected nearly 40 points in 2022-23.
He would have been a great project for Martin St-Louis, but obviously, Kent Hughes can't know everything either.
And you, would you have accepted the following trade?
To Montreal:
Cody Glass and his $2.5 million contract
2025 3rd round pick
2026 6th round pick
To Nashville:
Future considerations or an AHL player
I think it would have been a really interesting trade, but again, the goal here isn't to criticize Kent Hughes, who is doing an outstanding job.
In fact, don't be surprised if he tries to make a similar trade with the Edmonton Oilers.
