Even though he only becomes a free agent in the summer of 2026, discussions surrounding a possible trade involving Mike Matheson have already started circulating.

Some Canadiens fans would undoubtedly like to take advantage of the fact that the veteran defenseman's value is excellent right now and that Kent Hughes should act to obtain something interesting before it's too late.

In fact, on this topic, according to the site NHL Trade Rumor, a trade was proposed by journalist Dave Jenkins between the Canadiens and the Predators.

A proposed trade between Montreal and Nashville involving Mike Matheson

Here it is.

To Montreal:

- Zachary L'Heureux
- 2025 first-round pick (owned by Vegas)

To Nashville:

- Mike Matheson

This is an interesting suggestion for the organization, with the potential addition of a quality young prospect like L'Heureux, who is playing his first season in the NHL this year.

In 13 games with the Predators, the 21-year-old has recorded three assists and had a strong 2023-2024 season with the Milwaukee Admirals in the AHL, scoring 48 points, including 19 goals in 66 games.

The former Wildcats and Mooseheads player from the QMJHL could become a major asset for the Canadiens' rebuild, which, for some fans, is taking far too long.

For the Predators, this trade would make sense as the organization focused on free agents last summer to become a Stanley Cup contender this year with the signings of Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei.

General Manager Barry Trotz recently stated that the organization's plan could change if the team doesn't start winning quickly and that he wouldn't hesitate to initiate a rebuilding process.
