Earlier this week, we learned with shock that the young prospect of the Montreal Canadiens, Lane Hutson, was completely ignored among the finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award.

The finalists were ultimately:

Matthew Knies, from the Toronto Maple Leafs

Adam Fantilli, eligible for the 2023 draft

Logan Cooley, from the Arizona Coyotes.

It is especially Knies' nomination (Toronto) that is causing controversy.

There have been many reactions on social media since the announcement.

Hutson snubbed?

There is a big controversy right now, as fans and experts cannot believe that Lane Hutson was ignored.

After all, he had a truly historic season in the NCAA with Boston University.

Hutson broke Brian Leetch's record for the most points by an under-19 defenseman in NCAA history. (as mentioned by TVA Sports) That's no small feat!

He surpassed the combined seasons of Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes, which is staggering to think about.

In addition, Knies is an older forward who had worse statistics than Hutson.

Internet users are crying foul and bemoaning preferential treatment for Maple Leafs prospects.

"Knies wouldn't even be close to being considered among the finalists if he wasn't a Leafs prospect. A pure theft!"

Via TVA Sports

Hutson, 19, had an incredible 48 points (15 goals) in just 38 games (a +28 differential).

And there are many more comments like these. Here they are, right here:

Surprisingly, even some Maple Leafs fans don't understand this choice.
