The highly regarded informant Elliotte Friedman dropped a bomb earlier this week by estimating the chances of Pierre-Luc Dubois one day wearing the Canadiens jersey at 95%. Nothing less!
Of course, the rumor mill has started again since then, and the possibility of the Habs making a deal this summer to acquire the Winnipeg Jets forward is increasingly being evaluated.
Journalist Mathias Brunet addressed this famous subject in his latest article for La Presse.
Brunet first notes that Kent Hughes is in a strong position in this matter, as Dubois apparently wants to come to Montreal, and the risk of losing him for free in the summer of 2024 remains very real for the Jets.
B-level prospects
Under these circumstances, Brunet believes that the Habs could propose a list of secondary prospects to Jets General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff and let him choose from among them.
Names like Filip Mesar, Emil Heineman, Riley Kidney, Joshua Roy, Jayden Struble, and William Trudeau have been raised. Adam Engstrom and Oliver Kapanen could also be added, for example.
"The Jets will likely be able to get a late first-round pick and a prospect at next year's trade deadline as a rental player if they keep Dubois for another 11 months. But Cheveldayoff will be in a very uncomfortable position with Jets fans if he resigns himself to trading him in the middle of a playoff race.
"If he wants Dubois quickly, the Canadiens GM has plenty of prospects at several positions. And there won't be room for all these players. There is a way to create a shortlist of 'untouchables' and let the Jets choose from among the Mesar, Heineman, Kidney, Roy, Struble, Trudeau, and company. Hughes, being an intelligent man, will know how to take advantage of his favorable bargaining position if the Jets insist on trading Dubois to him."
Would an offer consisting of one or two of these prospects, as well as a first-round pick from a later year, be enough to make the Jets flinch?
We must admit that it is surprising to see the excellent young Joshua Roy being involved in this list, considering that he could become really dominant and is very promising, but we'll see.
Even Emil Heineman is impressive right now with the Laval Rocket (6 goals in 6 games).
One thing is certain, the Jets will be under pressure to trade the Quebecer. They may have to revise their demands downwards. And that will not displease Kent Hughes.
