Currently, Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon holds the record for the most lucrative contract signing (per season) in National Hockey League history.

Last September, he signed an eight-year contract worth $12.6 million annually. (100.8 million in total)

Well that record will soon be eclipsed, according to insider Nick Kypreos. The latter just revealed what Auston Matthews' next contract should look like, and it's huge.

"Auston Matthews is seeking a contract with a $15 million-a-year, eight-year AAV for his next deal, according to Nick Kypreos.

Kypreos says the Leafs won't just "hand it to" Matthews and adds that contract negotiations will take some time. Kypreos also mentioned that the longer the two sides go without an extension, the stronger the trade rumors around William Nylander will become."

So if the Leafs intend to keep Matthews, it will cost them about $15 million a year. ($120 million total, for eight years)

If Toronto refuses to pay that much, we're likely to see Auston Matthews leave Toronto, because another team will surely be willing to give him that crazy contract. It will be an interesting story to follow.

Do you think Auston Matthews is worth $120 million (or $15 million per year)? Would you give him that amount?
