After several weeks of rumours about the new general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, it was finally former agent Kent Hughes who received the job earlier this week.
A native of Beaconsfield in Montreal, the 52-year-old played in the Quebec Midgets AAA ranks as a child before flying to Boston in 1996.
In fact, journalist Mikaël Lalancette published a photo of Kent Hughes when he was younger. He proudly wore a blue-white-red sweater.
Now that the new GM has finally started his new job, he says that the priority for the moment is to get to know his new players better.
"Jeff and I have already met some players and I plan to meet others during the trip. I'll tell each one of them they can call me anytime. I also want to make it a priority to talk to players whose names circulate as bargaining chips in order to remove pressure on their shoulders.»
Hughes said he would like to see a new captain next year in his organization. However, he does not hide the fact that he will have to seek leadership in the transaction market.
«With all the travel over the last four days, I haven't had a lot of time to identify the leaders, but I hope and I guess there are. We'll see who has the leadership here, but we'll get it from the outside as well.»
The new GM seems more than happy to be in charge of the NHL's most prestigious organization. Supporters may like this one!
