The 2023 draft is a highly anticipated event, as exceptional players who have the potential to become great NHL stars will be available to all 32 teams in the league. We can remember that the 2022 auction was not unanimous about the potential of the players on the list. On the other hand, in a few years, we could be surprised by the development of these players despite the fact that they have not been described as big stars in the making by the experts.
That's what's happening with the 2017 draft, which was described as "weak" at the time. To refresh your memory a bit, here are the first three players selected: Nico Hischier, Nolan Patrick and Miro Heiskanen. Although Colorado finished last in the 2016-2017 season, the team did not win the lottery and even slipped to the fourth overall pick. However, today we realize that it is the Avalanche that is the winning team of the draft since with this fourth pick, the Avalanche got Cale Makar. This young defenseman has been simply amazing since the beginning of his career, breaking records and winning prestigious honors every season.
Finally, a crop that was described as weak was in fact quite the opposite. Indeed, underestimated players became real stars after their entry in the National League. Jason Robertson, Elias Pettersson, Robert Thomas, Nick Suzuki, Josh Norris and even goaltender Jake Oettinger came to mind.
Who knows, maybe the 2022 draft class will end up being more talented than we thought.
