Now that the Wild are officially on vacation, after being eliminated by the St. Louis Blues, you'll be hearing a lot about the Kevin Fiala file. (and their big problems with the salary cap)
A big challenge does indeed await GM Bill Guerin this summer, as Fiala will be looking for a new monster contract, but there's a big problem on the horizon.
Due to the buyouts of Ryan Suter and Zach Parise, Minnesota will have no money (buyouts that take about $12.75 million off the Wild's payroll for next year) Ouch!
According to many, it is almost impossible for Fiala to stay in Minnesota. They simply have no room to maneuver under the salary cap.
Many teams will definitely want the talented Fiala, such as the Ottawa Sens, but as my colleague Christian Matte (Marker.com) reports, there are several other options.
Most notably, one team that recently cleaned house, changing their identity and renewing their organization: the New York Islanders.
James Nichols, who follows the Islanders, believes that Fiala should definitely be targeted by GM Lou Lamoriello. He could be a great winger for the talented young center Mathew Barzal.
See his proposal (to Nichols):
TO ISLANDERS: Kevin Fiala
TO WILD: 13th overall pick in 2022 + Anthony Beauvillier or Oliver Wahlstrom.
So Minnesota would be getting two quality pieces, and ones that are going to cost almost nothing on their payroll. That's exactly what they need.
Who do you think would win the trade?
