At a press conference yesterday, general manager Kent Hughes even agreed to reveal the reason why Petry asked to be traded.
Here it is:
Just yesterday, Hughes admitted that if he gets the right offer, he will trade Petry. Petry is definitely one of the players with the best chance of being traded by the start of next season and he could really have played his last game with the CH.
On this subject, one of the teams that has been very interested in acquiring Petry for the past few weeks is the Dallas Stars. They could pay Kent Hughes' asking price, and all indications are that they will if John Klingberg leaves Dallas via the free agent market (and that seems to be what's going to happen)
Klingberg, 29, will be as free as a bird in a few days, and he doesn't appear to be close to a deal with the Stars. If this is confirmed (as soon as he signs elsewhere), the chances of Petry being traded to Dallas will immediately skyrocket.
See what Patrick Lortie recently reported:
Really interesting! So we learn here that the general managers of Montreal and Dallas are reportedly quite advanced in their negotiations for a potential trade involving Petry.
Montreal would like: Antonio Stranges and/or Mavrik Bourque
Dallas would like: Jeff Petry + one of the CH goalies
Do you think this is an interesting deal for Kent Hughes and the Habs?
Stranges, 20, was drafted 123rd overall by Dallas in 2020. He has 84 points (31 goals) in 60 OHL games this season with the London Knights (and 11 points, including 5 goals, in 6 playoff games)
Bourque, 20, was drafted 30th overall by Dallas in 2020. He has 68 points (20 goals) in 31 QMJHL games this season with the Shawinigan Cataractes (and 25 points, including 9 goals, in 16 playoff games)
If Klingberg leaves Dallas, an announcement could be imminent.
