In the last few hours, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced the signing of forward Kasperi Kapanen.

Kapanen and the Penguins did agree to terms on a two-season contract worth $3.2 million annually.

However, there is an important consequence for them following this signing.

The Penguins are officially over the NHL payroll and clearly, they will have to make a move by the start of the 2022-23 season in order to correct that. They can't keep their current roster as is.

To comply, Ron Hextall could complete another trade or send some players to waivers.

As Alex Desrosiers reports, there may be another solution:

"Hextall now has a 48-hour buyout window that opens in three days. Could the team buy out Jason Zucker or Marcus Pettersson, as reported by Frank Seravalli of DailyFaceOff?"

That would be a real shame for them, but it's a possibility. One thing for sure, it will be interesting to see what Ron Hextall's move will be.

If it weren't for the Montreal Canadiens deal involving Jeff Petry, he wouldn't have this problem, so obviously the Penguins GM considers Petry worth it.
