As reported by TVA Sports, National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman has just received some big news for his career.

An important distinction

Bettman was just honored by "Sports Business Daily" and won a prestigious award.

Bettman, 70, will even get a unique ceremony to honor him. It will take place on May 24 in New York City.

"Since his first media rights deal, Gary Bettman has been a fixture on our pages and an immensely influential figure in our industry."

"His willingness to think big, take risks and stick to his principles has solidified the NHL as an important property in the global sports landscape and has positioned the league to continue to thrive well into the future."

- Abraham Madkour

Some people will get a good laugh out of reading this statement, especially among Quebec hockey fans, but hey, let's be good players and congratulate Gary Bettman on this honor.

Let's face it, in thirty years as the NHL's number one man, Bettman has allowed the league to increase its revenues (a lot).

He also added eight teams via expansion. (Florida, Anaheim, Nashville, Atlanta, Columbus, Minnesota, Las Vegas and Seattle)

Note here that these are all U.S.-based teams, although Atlanta was fairly quickly relocated to Winnipeg.

Among the major stains on the record, we note three major labor disputes and a certain decline of hockey in Canada.
