The rumor involving Evgeny Kuznetsov and Ivan Demidov has just been confirmed, which is certainly a major development for the Montreal Canadiens.

As we reported to you earlier this week, Evgeny Kuznetsov has an agreement in place to go play for the same team as Ivan Demidov in the KHL, but he first had to free himself from his NHL contract.

That seems to be about to happen!

«I'm told that Evgeny Kuznetsov will be placed on unconditional waivers today for the purpose of mutual contract termination.

The Canes and the Caps are now free from Kuznetsov's contract. He's walking away from the $6 million salary due this season to return to the KHL.»

Wow!

Evgeny Kuznetsov in the KHL: a major development for Ivan Demidov and the Canadiens

Kuznetsov might potentially take Demidov's spot with SKA, which could help Kent Hughes and the Canadiens bring their 2024 5th overall pick to North America sooner than expected.

The Carolina Hurricanes have just confirmed it all.

See their official statement:

So it would be a four-year contract with SKA Saint Petersburg for Evgeny Kuznetsov, who has apparently played his last game in the NHL.

Kuznetsov, 32, was the 26th overall pick by the Washington Capitals in 2010 (1st round) and he amassed 575 points in 743 career NHL games.

We wish him the best of luck in the next phase of his career, and we look forward to seeing what impact this change will have on Ivan Demidov and the Canadiens.

Details to follow.
