In recent days, a rumor from Georges Laraque suggested that Kent Hughes and Martin St-Louis had met with Gerard Gallant.

He claimed that St-Louis and Hughes were spotted at a cafe in downtown Toronto alongside Gerard Gallant.

This rumor was quickly denied by Kent Hughes, who firmly refuted the claim.

Even worse, the GM revealed he had never spoken in his life to Gerard Gallant.

I have never spoken to Gerard Gallant in my life. The last time I saw him was at the trophy ceremony in Las Vegas when he won the Jack Adams. This is not accurate information.

This rumor brought up an old story about Gallant.

This dates back to the Marc Bergevin era when the GM was looking to replace Michel Therrien in 2017.

Marc Bergevin almost hired Gerard Gallant instead of Claude Julien

His final choice ultimately went to Claude Julien, but hockey insider Pierre LeBrun recently stated that Gerard Gallant was strongly considered for the position.

This is quite surprising, given that even though Gallant played his hockey in the QMJHL, he does not speak a word of French.

In a period when the language debate was prominent in Quebec, the idea that the Canadiens seriously considered an anglophone coach could raise eyebrows.

The sudden availability of Claude Julien, who had been fired by the Boston Bruins, seems to have changed the situation.
