No need to remind you that the Montreal Canadiens organization made a very big decision in the 2018 NHL Draft, selecting young Finnish center Jesperi Kotkaniemi with the third overall pick.
In doing so, the Tricolore chose Kotkaniemi over players like Brady Tkachuk, who many fans wanted to see in Montreal.
The least we can say is that it didn't work out the way they wanted. You know the rest.
Kotkaniemi, 22, has 115 points (44 goals) in 293 career NHL games.
Tkachuk, 23, has 252 points (114 goals) in 333 career NHL games. He is also the captain of the Ottawa Senators.
In the last few minutes, former scout Grant McCagg posted this.
"I'm amazed at how many scouting experts knew that Brady Tkachuk would go from 8 goals in college, to 22 goals in the NHL the following season. NHL teams are lacking in great scouting talent. They should add a 33rd club called the Hindsighters and hire them. They would never lose.
The funny thing is that the majority of Tricolore fans who wanted to pass on Kotkaniemi preferred Zadina. But today... everyone who complains about missing out on Tkachuk is acting like he was the guy they all wanted back then." - Grant McCagg
He then reveals this. Really interesting!
"The Canadians' scouting staff thought long and hard about this choice. It came down to Tkachuk or KK. (The final choice came down to Tkachuk and Kotkaniemi).
Brady's lack of goals, his rather weak defensive play and his minor skating issues pushed them towards KK. Tkachuk exceeded expectations, not KK. That happens a lot with young players."
- Grant McCagg
So Montreal Canadiens officials would have chosen not to draft Brady Tkachuk for these reasons. (not enough NCAA goals scored, poor defensive play at times, small concerns about his skating ability)
Tkachuk had 8 goals (31 points) in 40 games in his final NCAA season before being drafted to the NHL.
It's interesting to have this information!
