The Habs had given the Flames future considerations and Hughes had even managed to secure a conditional first-round pick. This personnel move was actually a way to free up money on the Flames' payroll, and as reported by Cédrick Gervais, from the site Marqueur.com, a similar transaction could very well take place during the off-season.
According to insider Frank Seravalli, from the Daily Faceoff site, there are serious discussions within the Washington Capitals' circles about the possibility of liquidating the final year of Quebecer Anthony Mantha's contract.
He has not really met expectations with the Capitals, with a rather modest production of 27 points in 67 games in 2022-2023 and he is due to earn a salary of $5.7 million for the next season.
Could Anthony Mantha be of interest to the Canadiens?
As we know, his name has been associated with the Canadiens in the past and Seravalli also mentioned that if Brian MacLellan, the GM of the Capitals, wants to part with Mantha, he might be obliged to include an incentive in a transaction.
A scenario quite similar to that of Sean Monahan last summer, and the similarities are somewhat the same, as Mantha has suffered a few injuries that have slowed him down in recent years. He has had seasons of 24 and 25 goals with the Detroit Red Wings, and he is only 28 years old.
Imagine the trade:
To Montreal
- Anthony Mantha and a draft pick
To Washington
- Future considerations
He could prove to be an interesting acquisition for Kent Hughes this summer, as he could, like Monahan, become a key player for the Canadiens and thus potentially increase his value at the trade deadline.
However, as the experience with Sean Monahan took a rather bad turn, he got injured after a great start to the season, the Canadiens' GM might not intend to get involved again with this type of transaction.
Case to follow.
