He is an excellent hockey player and he's not far from the star player he was with Johnny Gaudreau and the Calgary Flames a few years ago. (82 points in 78 games)
During their end-of-season review, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton clearly demonstrated an openness to signing an impact forward and they clearly showed a willingness to aim for the playoffs as early as next season.
What if the solution was Sean Monahan?
He will be a free agent on July 1, he loves Montreal, he knows the people in the Habs locker room very well (obviously including head coach Martin St-Louis) and Kent Hughes knows him well.
He was the only one to give him a chance last summer!
The topic has been coming up often lately on BPM Sports, and Martin Lemay and Stéphane Gonzalez have added to the discussion.
What if we saw Sean Monahan in the Canadiens' uniform next season?
Do you like the idea?
If we consider that the trio of Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki, and Juraj Slafkovsky remains intact;
If we consider that Kirby Dach is back at 100%;
If we consider that Alex Newhook and Joshua Roy continue their interesting progression;
If we consider the return of Sean Monahan to Montreal via free agency;
If we consider that the CH drafts a solid forward like Cayden Lindstrom with the 5th overall pick;
If we consider that Kent Hughes manages to acquire another Kirby Dach (like Trevor Zegras or Martin Necas), we realize that Martin St-Louis could have a very interesting lineup very soon.
These are all very possible things.
Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovsky
Newhook - Dach - Zegras
Lindstrom - Monahan - Roy
This is starting to be a dangerous top-9, and a top-9 worthy of a playoff team. To be continued!
Monahan, 29 years old, sixth overall pick in 2013 (1st round), has collected 24 points in 34 games with the Winnipeg Jets this season, and 35 points in 49 games with the Montreal Canadiens.
Over his career, we're talking about 538 points in 764 games.
