On February 2nd, the Canadiens traded forward Sean Monahan to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a 1st round pick in 2024 and a conditional 3rd round pick in 2027.
Remember that Kent Hughes had acquired Monahan in August 2022 from the Calgary Flames, in addition to a free 1st round pick, in return for future considerations.
What a great move from A to Z for the general manager of the Canadiens and what a steal! He literally acquired two first-round picks and a conditional third-round pick, totally for free, in the end.
In short, let's get back to the trade completed with the Winnipeg Jets a few weeks ago.
At the time of this trade, the Jets' first-round pick was either the 30th or 31st overall pick.
However, since then, things have changed a lot following a 6th straight loss yesterday to the Senators:
The difference is indeed quite significant.
To trade a 31st overall pick for a 23rd overall pick would have probably cost (at the very least) a good 2nd round pick to the Montreal Canadiens.
We're talking about a jump of almost 10 spots.
With a 23rd overall pick, the Canadiens have a very good chance of being able to draft a player who is top-12 or top-15 on their own personal list. It could change everything.
In short, we will continue to monitor this for you, but it's definitely an interesting change for our Habs.
