2 names emerge as favourites for the vacant coaching job with the Canadiens
Beyond transactions, we will need to keep an eye on the hires within the Montreal Canadiens organization this summer for Kent Hughes.
It's a big deal because there are two very important positions to fill.
The head coach position of the Laval Rocket, left vacant by the departure of Jean-François Houle, and the assistant coach position of the Montreal Canadiens, left vacant by the reassignment of Alex Burrows.
And regarding the first position, things are becoming clearer.
According to Marco Normandin, it would be between Serge Aubin and Sylvain Favreau for the head coach position of the Laval Rocket
Indeed, according to Marco Normandin's sources, it would be between two names to replace JF Houle.
«According to my information, until recently there were three finalists considered for the position: Serge Aubin (Berlin - DEL), Sylvain Favreau (Drummondville - QMJHL), and Gilles Bouchard (Sherbrooke - QMJHL).
I am told that since then, Gilles Bouchard is now out of the running. So only Aubin and Favreau remain.» - Marco Normandin, HABSolumentFan
As for Pascal Vincent, whose name has been raised by some, he would not be interested in the position due to his contractual situation with the Columbus Blue Jackets organization.
If we rely on Normandin's words, a hire could be announced very soon within the Canadiens organization (possibly as early as next Monday), first for the Laval Rocket, and we also understand that Serge Aubin is the favorite of the management:
«According to what I have been allowed to learn, Serge Aubin refused an offer from the Rocket in recent days. He is currently the head coach of the Eisbären Berlin in Germany in the DEL, and it is assumed that it would take a very attractive offer to lure him out of his comfortable situation.» - Marco Normandin, HABSolumentFan
Finally, he adds that we should also keep in mind the name of Stéphane Julien, in case things don't work out with the other two candidates mentioned above.
So, from what we conclude:
Habs management's favorite: Serge Aubin
The favorite to be hired and accept the position: Sylvain Favreau
The dark horse who could surprise: Stéphane Julien
Aubin is currently in Berlin, in the DEL, Favreau is in Drummondville, in the QMJHL, and Julien is currently in Grand Rapids, in the AHL.
A case to follow in the coming days.
Great job, Marco!
