In 27 games with the Mississauga Steelheads, the team's third pick in the last draft has 39 points, including 16 goals so far, and was one of the Canadiens' top prospects at training camp last September, to the point where Kent Hughes gave him an entry-level contract just before he was sent to his junior team.
And that's all it took for Beck to already be part of some proposed trades, and as reported by my colleagues at Fanadiens.com, one of them was proposed by an internet user, and let's just say it makes some sense.
On the Twitter account of a certain Tedskovsky, the latter suggests that Kent Hughes trade the 18-year-old center to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for goalie Devon Levi.
Despite being one of the top prospects in the Sabres organization and excelling at the university level since last year, the team doesn't seem to be in too much of a rush to graduate him to the NHL. The Sabres already have young goaltenders Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Erik Portillo on their roster, which could suggest a trade could be in the cards.
But if we were to just talk amongst ourselves, there is no real relief in front of the net for the Habs and the arrival of a goalie with excellent potential within the organization could take some weight off Kent Hughes, who would not necessarily be under pressure to draft a goalie at the next draft.
On the other hand, it would be extremely surprising if the Habs traded Owen Beck in the short term simply to bring in a backup because, after all, the team is still rebuilding and Hughes and Jeff Gorton are going to take all the time necessary to evaluate the organization's prospects.
Still, just for fun, let's ask the question.
