While the topic was player development, Therrien got to talking about Michael McCarron. The former coach was quick to see, at the time, that the 1st round pick (25th overall) in the 2013 draft was never going to become a regular NHL player. Not because he wasn't putting in the effort to improve, but because he was always late to the game. The future will finally prove Therrien right as McCarron was at best an AHL player.
The topic of discussion then quickly shifted from McCarron to prospect development. Scouts, at the time, were really wondering why the CH coaches were not able to develop their picks properly. This was a topic that was the source of much discussion internally as the blame often fell on the coaches. This Tuesday at noon, Therrien was not soft on the CH scouts by sending them a beautiful and colorful retort:
This line says a lot about the work of amateur scouts of the CH during what can be called a dark period of the organization in the draft (and in the way of developing young people, by the leaders). It's interesting to see that the ball on who was going to take the blame for this was also thrown internally and not just in the media!
You can watch the full show from this Tuesday below, including this Therrien bit on player development around the 27 minute mark of the show.
