Jeff Petry's name has been associated with the Dallas Stars for the past few weeks and some experts have said that his possible move to Texas is likely to depend on the situation of Stars offensive defenseman John Klingberg.

Klingberg reportedly requested a trade from the Stars because he felt unappreciated during talks for a new contract. He will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

But the Stars are currently in a playoff race and their general manager, Jim Nill, would like to secure a replacement on the blue line for the Swedish defenseman. This explains why they want Petry, why they have an interest in the Habs defender and also why Klingberg has not yet been traded.

At least that's what insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported.

Klingberg is still having a good season with 26 points in 42 games, but the risk of losing him for nothing at the end of the season could hurt the Stars' defense.

That's when the Canadiens could enter talks with the possibility of including Jeff Petry in a potential trade.

But beware, this does not mean that there would be a one-for-one trade. Kent Hughes will certainly want to get draft picks or a Stars prospect in return for Habs current number 26.

The Stars are currently only three points away from a playoff berth and a month from the trade deadline, should Jim Nill ever be able to trade John Klingberg, the latter could prove useful to the Stars, should the team qualify for the playoffs.
