After three seasons in the NHL, it can't be said that Alexis Lafrenière has set the world on fire since joining the New York Rangers. Selected first overall in the 2020 Draft, the Quebec forward hasn't really put up numbers worthy of a top overall pick, which leaves room for criticism of him.
However, for a former NHL goaltender, he believes that these negative critique aren't always justified.
During his appearance on the show La Poche Bleue le midi,, Eric Fichaud, now an analyst on TVA Sports, made a quite interesting comment to silence the critics of the Quebec forward who has been slow to produce after three seasons in New York.
"He's not an elite player, but he's a good player. Tim Stützle is an elite player. That doesn't mean Lafrenière will never be a guy who scores 25 goals or gets 50 to 60 points in the National Hockey League."
"As long as you analyze Lafrenière in the right way, he can certainly help the Canadiens in the right situation."
It must be said that Laffy hasn't always had the opportunity to be showcased in the Rangers' all-star lineup this season, and since their elimination by the Devils, some Canadiens fans would like to see the Quebec forward come to Montreal during the offseason.
Regarding this, Fichaud didn't hesitate to say that he wasn't worried if he ever landed with the Habs, and he made a comparison that may not be unanimous.
"For me, Jonathan Drouin has more pure talent than Lafrenière. As for the rest, though, Lafrenière is more combative, more involved. He does more things on the ice. He may not have Jonathan's talent, but I wouldn't necessarily be worried about him. He has the ability to produce in Montreal." Really? Drouin more talented than Lafrenière? Wow!
Without wanting to get too caught up in comparisons between the two players, a change of scenery could be beneficial for the Rangers' number 13, and it will be interesting to follow this situation during the offseason.
