It is still unknown at what rank Kent Hughes will speak during the next draft, but speculation can already begin on what the management will do during the offseason.
Some experts have recently mentioned that the Canadiens may want to sign an unrestricted free agent during the summer, and an informant has suggested the name of a right-handed defenseman who could greatly help the young defensive brigade.
According to Marc Dumont, from the blog Montreal Hockey Now, Kent Hughes should bring New Jersey Devils defenseman Damon Severson to Montreal. Severson has collected 33 points this season and will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
However, Severson reportedly has reservations about playing in the Montreal market, and if the Canadiens wanted to attract him to Montreal, Hughes would need strong arguments to convince him to sign a contract with the team.
At 28 years old, Severson has played his entire career with the Devils, and as the team is on its way to becoming an NHL powerhouse, he may very well want to stay in New Jersey to be part of a potential championship team.
But if the Devils' General Manager, Tom Fitzgerald, had no intention of retaining Severson's services for the next season, Kent Hughes might try to convince the defenseman to join one of the youngest defensive brigades in the NHL and become a pillar of the team on the blue line.
